Manchester United youngster Tim Fosu-Mensah has revealed he did not have the chance to say a personal goodbye to Louis van Gaal, but will remain eternally grateful to the veteran Dutch tactician.

Van Gaal handed Fosu-Mensah his Manchester United debut earlier this year, the 18-year-old coming on off the bench in a Premier League win over Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The defender finished the 2015/16 campaign with 12 senior appearances to his name, including four in the FA Cup, which Manchester United ultimately won.

Van Gaal was sacked at the end of the season, being replaced by Jose Mourinho, and Fosu-Mensah did not have the chance to thank him personally, even though he did send his countryman a message.

"Unfortunately I was not able to personally say goodbye to him", Fosu-Mensah explained to ELF Voetbal.

"When I travelled to the young Dutch squad last month, I sent a message to him.

"I am eternally grateful to Van Gaal.

"He always showed great confidence in me", the defender added.

This season Fosu-Mensah has made just two first team appearances for Manchester United, one in the Premier League and one in the EFL Cup, under new boss, Jose Mourinho.
