Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton feels James Milner is a dream player for any manager as he is ready to put in a shift wherever the team need him to be.

Starting his career as winger, Milner had developed his game as a midfielder when he joined Liverpool from Manchester City in 2015, but has started the season in an unfamiliar position.

With Alberto Moreno struggling at start of the term, Jurgen Klopp has deployed the England international as a left-back, and Houghton admits that Milner’s willingness to do anything for the team makes him an absolute delight for managers.

When asked about Milner, Houghton said on LFC TV: “He is a consummate professional.

“You can ask him to do anything, play as a goalkeeper or a centre forward, he will do a job for you.

“He is a manager’s dream, he is in every day, he is ready for training, which rubs off on the other players around him.”

The former Liverpool midfielder also feels that Milner gives something different to the Reds team by playing at left-back and believes the ex-Leeds man has again proven his credentials for the club in a new position.

“He is an absolutely phenomenal player, and I am delighted that he has started [the season] at left back.

"He gives you a different option there as he is a very studious footballer; he knows the position where he should be.

“He has been exceptional this season, and he has been exceptional since he came to the club.”

The former Leeds man was on target earlier today when his penalty secured a 2-1 for the Reds over Swansea City.

Milner has made 51 appearances for the Reds since joining the club last year, and is one of the more experienced heads inside the Liverpool dressing room.
