Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton believes Jurgen Klopp is doing the right thing by keeping expectations at Anfield in check this season.

Liverpool are desperate to secure a Champions League spot by finishing in the top four, and a good start to the season means the Reds are one of the contenders to do so.

Liverpool’s style of football has captured the attention of many, and some even believe Klopp’s men could challenge for the Premier League title at the end of the season.

Klopp has so far tried to keep expectations under control at Anfield, but Houghton feels looking at the next few games, it is not hard to think that the Reds could be serious title contenders.

However, he believes the Liverpool manager is doing the right thing by tempering expectations, and keeping the focus of his players on just the next game.

When asked why Klopp is trying to keep a lid on Liverpool’s ambitions this season, the former Red told LFC TV: “I think because of the next six to seven games.

“Manchester United we know is always a tough game, but you look at some of the others – Swansea, West Brom, Palace, Sunderland, Southampton, Bournemouth – these are games Liverpool could win.

“I think he is trying to track the tempo of what’s going on at the moment.

"A lot of fans will be watching Liverpool, and how well they are playing, and are starting to think not only should we be looking to the top four, but maybe to win the league this season.

“The style of football, the goals they have been scoring, I think there is an emphasis that this could be Liverpool’s year.

“I think the manager is doing the right thing by calming everyone down at the club, and saying, ‘listen we are doing very well at the moment, but what we must do is to just focus on the next game’.”
