Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton has credited Jurgen Klopp’s leadership for the Reds’ positive start to the season, and admits that there is an air of confidence at Anfield these days.

Leaving aside a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, Liverpool have looked the part in the Premier League this season, and have already beaten teams such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Leicester City.

While their defending has still been suspect, Klopp’s men have looked ominous in attack, and have already bagged 16 goals in the first six Premier League games, making the Reds the second highest scorers in the league behind Manchester City.

Houghton admits that the Liverpool squad are looking confident, and are pushing each other to achieve excellence this season, but he feels all that comes from the leadership provided by manager Klopp.

He believes the players are reaping the rewards of working with the German for a full-pre season, where the Liverpool manager drilled his style of football into his men.

Houghton said on LFC TV: “There is an air of confidence and belief about them at the moment.

“There is a squad of players, who if not in the starting eleven, are on the sidelines, waiting to push for your position to get in.

“It comes down to leadership, and the leadership comes from the manager.

"And I think after having a pre-season where he dominated things, from the tactics, team selection and what the training is going to be, we are seeing the rewards from the players on the pitch.”

Liverpool will travel to the Liberty Stadium to take on Swansea in the early kick off today.
