Leeds United boss Garry Monk feels his side are starting to show real improvement after they put Barnsley to the sword at Elland Road, running out 2-1 winners in the Championship clash.

The Whites took the lead in the 36th minute after Kyle Bartley helped to bundle the ball into the back of the net from a corner; Barnsley had been firmly on top until Leeds took the lead.

Pablo Hernandez then had a good chance, but shot wide. The Spaniard was to get on the scoresheet though as he took advantage of a long ball played to him in the 54th minute, which he helped into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Barnsley would not lie down though and in the 70th minute, Leeds defender Charlie Taylor turned a cross from Cole Kpekawa into his own net, setting up a nervy finish for the home side.

But Leeds held on to record their fifth win in six games in all competition and Monk is delighted, feeling his work is finally starting to pay off on the pitch.

"It was never going to be easy today in a derby, but what we've been working on is really starting to show", he told LUTV.

"We've seen a real improvement in these last seven games.

The first half was quite even, but we got on the front foot in the second half and deservedly got another goal", the Leeds boss continued.

"We switched off for one moment when they scored. We had to weather their attacks, but we defended really well."

Leeds are now up to eleventh spot in the Championship table after picking up 16 points from their opening eleven games.
