Rangers centre-back Danny Wilson has revealed that his favourite player while growing up was Italy and AC Milan legend Paolo Maldini.

Maldini, who progressed through AC Milan’s youth set-up, went on to amass nearly 850 appearances in all competitions for the Italian giants, helping the club to five Champions Leagues, seven Serie A titles and one Coppa Italia amongst other honours.

The former defender also represented Italy with distinction and went on to even captain the national team, earning 128 caps for the Azzurri in total.

And Wilson, who went to Italy for summer holidays during Maldini’s heyday, insisted that he has always been a big fan of the now 48-year-old.

“My favourite player growing up was Paolo Maldini”, he told Rangers TV.

“My mum's side of the family are Italian, so we used to go and spend summer holidays in Italy and it was around the time Maldini was captain of the national team.

“I always thought he was brilliant.”

Wilson, who is a product of Rangers’ youth system, made his senior debut for the club in the 2009/10 campaign before joining Liverpool at the start of the following season.

The 24-year-old failed to make his mark at Anfield and joined Hearts permanently in 2013, with Rangers re-signing him two years later.
