Scotland and Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish admits that his national team will miss the services of Celtic midfielder Scott Brown.

The 31-year-old midfielder announced his retirement from international football earlier this year, and said that the decision to give up playing for Scotland was made to extend his club career at Parkhead.

Dalglish admits that he doesn’t understand why players retire from international football and feels one must continue to play for their country if they get picked, no matter what the circumstances.

The former Liverpool man was quoted as saying by the Daily Record: “It’s always strange when you hear of players retiring from international football – I thought you had to be selected before you could retire. I don’t understand that one.

“Okay, he might have had some injury problems but if I was being picked for my country I’d always go.”

Dalglish also admits that Scotland, at the moment, are in no position to lose players of Brown’s quality and admits that the midfielder showed his talent against Manchester City in the Champions League.

“Scott has been fantastic for Celtic and for Scotland and we are not in a position where we can afford to lose people of his quality.

“His performance against Manchester City last week was exceptional and that lets you know we’ll miss him.”

Brown, who has made 379 appearances for Celtic since joining from Hibernian in 2007, earned 50 international caps for Scotland before announcing his retirement in August.
