Former Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn believes that Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner must be very careful if he is offered the chance to take charge of Aston Villa.

The Villa Park outfit are looking for a new manager after opting to sack Roberto Di Matteo, following a poor start to the campaign in the Championship.

Wagner, who has led Huddersfield to a stunning start to the season which sees the club sitting top of the table, has been mooted as a leading contender to succeed Di Matteo at Villa Park.

But Redfearn thinks that Wagner has benefited from being given time to implement his ideas at Huddersfield and must be wary of any approach from Villa as the former European champions do not have a track record in recent years of giving managers an opportunity to develop a style of play.

He said on Radio Yorkshire: "I think David Wagner has to be careful.

"If he jumps ship and goes to Villa, at this moment in time Huddersfield Town are overachieving, and [if] it’s not quite right [at Villa]…

"People will expect him to do with Villa what he's doing at Huddersfield Town", Redfearn continued.

"Now it's taken him a good 18 months and he took one or two hits last year. Huddersfield weren't great last year, with Wagner in charge.

"He got in place his idea of what he wanted to do and how he wanted to play, and in the summer he got his players in.

"Now, it's whether he would get that chance and that opportunity at Villa, that time to settle and build.

"They've had numerous managers who haven't been given that time."

Wagner's Huddersfield have already locked horns with Aston Villa in the Championship this season, securing a 1-1 draw at Villa Park in August.
