Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has appeared to give his approval to a message to England to call him up to replace Wayne Rooney.

England skipper Rooney has been dropped by interim Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, with Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson to take the armband for tonight's clash against Slovenia.

A Rangers fan posted a message on Twitter with photographs of Waghorn in action and wrote: "Forget Rooney! He's yet number 10."

And Waghorn wasted no time in quickly retweeting the message.

The 26-year-old has played for England before, turning out for his country at Under-19 and Under-21 level. Waghorn has never been called up to the senior squad however.

He has been prolific since joining Rangers and netted 28 goals in all competitions last season as the Gers won the Scottish Championship title.

Waghorn has again been amongst the goals in the current campaign, netting eight times in nine games across all competitions.

It remains to be seen whether his goalscoring feats catch Southgate's eye when he picks his next England squad.

Waghorn has commented on his chances of playing for England before, explaining he feels turning out in the Premier League may be essential.
