AZ Alkmaar technical director Max Huiberts has rubbished talk that the Dutch side forced Tottenham Hotspur to overpay for striker Vincent Janssen.

The Eredivisie outfit played hardball when Spurs came calling for Janssen in the summer transfer window, eventually agreeing to sell to the Premier League side for €20m.

While Janssen top scored in the Eredivisie last season and had broken through into the senior Netherlands squad, the striker had only one season of experience in the Dutch top flight.

But Huiberts thinks that AZ demanded and received a fair price for the hitman, who he pointed out had conquered the Eredivisie and risen to become the country's premier striker.

The technical director, who sympathises with fans missing Janssen, said in club magazine AZ Spreekt: "I was not in charge of it, but afterwards I thought 'wow, nice, we have done well'.

"Yes, I was relieved that it was completed well. The purchasing club, Vincent Janssen, and ourselves, were very satisfied.

"But I also understand the fans who think we have lost a very good player.

"That's just the situation we're dealing with in the Dutch league.

"It was said that it was ridiculous that we asked for more than €10m for Vincent because he plays for AZ. But then I think, why?" Huiberts continued.

"He is the top scorer in the Netherlands and the number one striker for the Oranje.

"Vincent had already reached the top in the Eredivisie.

"I am sure that he will adapt quickly to the level of the Premier League."

Janssen is yet to score in the Premier League for Tottenham, despite featuring in seven games for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

The 22-year-old has though netted in the EFL Cup.
