Former Liverpool attacking midfielder Vladimir Smicer believes Jordan Henderson will be brimming with confidence after captaining England in a goalless draw against Slovenia in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

After Wayne Rooney was dropped from England’s starting line-up by interim boss Gareth Southgate, Henderson received the captain’s armband for the first time on the international stage.

The 26-year-old, who has often been perceived to be the natural heir to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, is the current Reds captain.

And Smicer thinks Henderson, who has been in impressive form for Jurgen Klopp’s team this season, will be inspired and confident, following his new achievement for England against Slovenia earlier in the week.

“It will inspire him”, Smicer said on LFC TV when asked about Henderson captaining the England team.

“I think it will be a motivation for himself. I think it’s an honour to be the captain of your national team.

“He will definitely come back with more confidence.”

Henderson, who joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, has scored once and provided one assist in nine appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants this season.

He has also earned 30 caps for England since making his senior international debut in November 2010.
