Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has compared Jose Mourinho to madcap spy Johnny English and accused the Manchester United manager of ruining a potentially good game at Anfield last night.

Mourinho, who took charge of Manchester United in the summer, is known for his cautious approach in big games, and he set his side up at Anfield to stop Liverpool playing, even at the expense of his own team's effectiveness in the final third.

The Red Devils were content with sitting deep and defending for the majority of the game as Liverpool enjoyed the better possession.

Jurgen Klopp’s team would have come out with the full three points if not for the heroics of Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, who did well to keep out the efforts of Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho.

And Thompson, who turned out for Liverpool between 1996 and 2000, felt there was nothing constructive about Manchester United’s performance against their arch-rivals in the vital Premier League game.

And he mocked Mourinho by comparing him to the Rowan Atkinson character Johnny English.

“Mourinho looks like Jonny English and ruins good games. Nothing constructive about that performance”, [sic] he tweeted.

Manchester United, who have now drawn two consecutive Premier League games, presently find themselves six places and five points adrift of leaders Manchester City.
