Former Rotherham United manager Neil Redfearn believes the club need to be honest about the fact they are lacking financially when it comes to being able to compete in the Championship.

The Millers are rooted to the bottom of the Championship and sacked manager Alan Stubbs on Wednesday after a torrid run of form which has seen them win just one league game this season.

Rotherham barely managed to save their Championship status last season and it seems they are swimming against the tide this term again to avoid relegation to League One.

Ex-Leeds United boss Redfearn, who was sacked by Rotherham midway through last season, feels managers are not getting the right kind of backing at the New York Stadium from the top.

He admires the work done by club chairman Tony Stewart to get the club into the second tier of English football, but feels the Rotherham supremo needs to accept the fact that he needs some financial backing in order to make them a competitive outfit in the Championship.

The former Rotherham boss said on Radio Yorkshire: “I think the club's got to look at itself really.

“Are managers getting a proper opportunity at the football club?

“I think Tony Stewart has done a fantastic job as chairman to get them to that point, but the guy probably needs some help because they can't compete financially at that level.

“And as much as they don't like that message getting out, it's a fact.

“He needs some help.

“If Rotherham United are going to compete at that level and be a competitive mid-table Championship club then it needs some financial backing.”
