Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino wants Vincent Janssen to remain calm and has insisted that young strikers such as the Dutchman will need time to settle down in England.

Spurs paid a sizable fee of £17m to snare away Janssen, who was the Eredivisie’s highest scorer last season, from AZ Alkmaar this summer, but the Dutchman is yet to set the stage on fire in north London.

Janssen has scored just once, a penalty against Gillingham, in his first 12 games for the club and is under pressure to justify Pochettino’s faith in him in the coming weeks.

With Harry Kane out with an injury, the Dutchman is even more under pressure to find the back of the net soon, but the Tottenham boss is not keen to see the player put himself under undue pressure.

"He is not frustrated, he is disappointed as strikers like to score", Pochettino said in a press conference, before explaining that as a striker, Janssen is always likely to feel something is missing from his game if he does not hit the back of the net.

"Always it is incomplete – if you play well but you don't score, something is always missing.

"But he is happy. He wants to show he has the quality to score and maybe he puts a lot of pressure on himself – 'I need to score, I need to score'.

"In the end, we need to calm him, say, 'Yes, good, don't worry, work hard, keep going and you will ensure you will score'.”

The Tottenham manager also added that coming from the Netherlands, the young striker will need some time to settle down in the Premier League and is keen to remain patient with Janssen.

"I laugh because we need to give young players time. He's come from Holland and always those players from outside need time.

"He only needs time. It always happens in football, there are a lot of examples in football. A similar period happened with Harry Kane and with Janssen it's the same."
