Vincent Janssen has revealed he sought advice over a move to Tottenham Hotspur from former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy and his countryman did not put him off heading to White Hart Lane.

AZ Alkmaar played hardball with Spurs over selling the man who finished as the top scorer in last season's Eredivisie, but eventually gave way and agreed to let him go for a €20m fee in the summer window.

Janssen, a Netherlands international, has developed a friendship with Oranje assistant Van Nistelrooy and revealed he spoke to the ex-Manchester United man about a switch to Spurs when clubs began to approach him.

"I have a special bond with Ruud", the striker told Dutch magazine Helden.

"I asked him confidentially for advice when the first clubs came forward [for me], what he would recommend and specifically how he viewed a transfer to Spurs", Janssen continued.

"And also how to conduct a conversation with the club.

"Let's put it this way: he did not look negatively on my transfer to Spurs."

Van Nistelrooy, a Dutch legend who netted 35 times in 70 caps for his country, is well versed in what it takes to succeed in the Premier League.

He scored 150 goals during his spell at Manchester United, which ran from 2001 until 2006, and picked up one Premier League title, one FA Cup and one League Cup.

Janssen, who has been handed more Spurs starts in the absence of Harry Kane, is still looking for his first Premier League goal.
