Former Celtic midfielder Tommy Callaghan has urged the Bhoys never to give up while there is still a chance they can finish third in their Champions League group to secure European football in the new year.

The Scottish champions, who were beaten 2-0 by Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday, are yet to win a game in the Champions League.

Celtic presently find themselves in fourth spot in Group C with just one point from three outings, two adrift of third-placed Monchengladbach.

Prior to the loss against the Bundesliga outfit, the Bhoys were thrashed 7-0 by Barcelona before recording an impressive 3-3 draw against Manchester City, with both games taking place last month.

There is an incentive for not finishing last in the Champions League groups as the third-placed teams receive a chance to extend their European adventure by featuring in the Round of 32 in the Europa League.

And Callaghan is certain that manager Brendan Rodgers will lift Celtic’s spirits and push them to finish Group C in third spot.

“There's always hope. You can't give in”, he told Celtic TV, when asked if the Bhoys can finish third in their Champions League group.

“The players have got to lift themselves. Brendan will lift them, I know that for a fact.

“He's been down these roads before and is an experienced young manager.

“I'm sure he will lift them and it's up to the players to make that step up.”

Celtic’s next Champions League outing will be against Monchengladbach in Germany on 1st November.
