Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny believes that he is a similar kind of leader to Tottenham Hotspur and France skipper Hugo Lloris.

With Per Mertesacker nursing a serious knee injury, the France international has been appointed as Arsenal captain by Arsene Wenger and the defender has led the Gunners with panache this season.

Leading from the back, Koscielny has been one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League over the last few seasons and admits that he is keener on leading by example than through words.

The Frenchman feels as long as he is giving his best on the pitch he doesn’t need to give long speeches to his team-mates and he believes his performances for the club should be doing all his talking as Arsenal captain.

When asked about his leadership style, the defender told French sports daily L’Equipe: “I am not in the face for sure.

“I’m not a great speaker, I do not like long speeches, it’s not in my nature, but for me it’s not the role of the captain.

"The captain is a player who must lead by example on the field, who should lead his team-mates to a win.

“I try to do what I do best – I fight on the pitch, win my duels, play a clean game and show my team-mates that they can count on me.

“My benefits and qualities on the pitch are my leadership quotes.”

Koscielny went on to compare his leadership methods to Tottenham skipper Lloris and admits that the goalkeeper is also a man of few words, who prefers to let his performances do the talking for him.

“Hugo is someone, when he has something to say, he will say it to you and I do the same.

“And he too is someone who shows his leadership on the pitch.”
