Former Chelsea star Jason Cundy has explained that the best thing about the club’s new 3-4-3 formation is that their attacking threat is still intact, despite being defensively solid.

The Blues ruined Jose Mourinho’s return to Stamford Bridge by thrashing Manchester United 4-0 in the Premier League on Sunday by playing in the formation.

Antonio Conte, who took charge of Chelsea in the summer, prefers playing three at the back, which was evident during his managerial spell at Juventus, with the 47-year-old also implementing similar tactics with the Italian national team.

The London outfit have thus far played three matches in the new system, winning all of them, scoring nine times and conceding none.

And Cundy expressed his delight after watching Chelsea find the right balance between attacking and defending in the new 3-4-3 system.

“The thing I'm impressed with the most since we've seen this change at the back [to three defenders] is that we've not compromised our attacking threat by being defensively solid”, he said on Chelsea TV following the game.

“We look defensively sound, assured, we look exactly like we know what we're doing.

“Yet we still carry attacking threat.

“And to get that balance right, between not conceding and creating clear goalscoring opportunities is actually really tough.”

Chelsea are currently fourth in the Premier League with 19 points from nine games, just one adrift of leaders Manchester City.
