Mauricio Pochettino has thrown down the gauntlet to fringe players at Tottenham Hotspur to grab their chance when it comes along and convince him they should be starting regularly.

With games coming thick and fast, Pochettino is expected to make changes to his side for Tuesday evening's EFL Cup tie against Liverpool at Anfield.

He has already confirmed that Michel Vorm will start between the sticks, while he is considering playing Georges-Kevin N'Koudou from the start at Anfield.

And Pochettino thinks that by playing fringe players he is giving them a chance to show they are worthy of a spot in the starting eleven for Premier League and Champions League matches.

"They are not machines. It’s very difficult to cope with the pressure in every game because every game is important and when you play Champions League it’s tough, very demanding", Pochettino told a press conference.

"It’s for that reason we rotate and we will rotate in the next few games because it’s important all the squad feel they have a chance to play and show their quality.

"Maybe tomorrow for some players it’s a good chance to show they have the potential to consistently be in the selection for the starting 11, not just in cup games but in the Premier League and Champions League", the Spurs manager added.

Spurs have not won at Anfield since 2011 and have suffered three defeats and two draws in their trips to face Liverpool since.

The last clash at Anfield between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw earlier this year.

Tuesday will be the first occasion Spurs will play at an expanded Anfield, which has now had its capacity increased to just over 54,000.
