Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has told Arsene Wenger he is keen to see him lead the Gunners to the Premier League title this season.

Kroenke is a firm fan of the Frenchman and his work at the Emirates Stadium and insists he would be delighted to see Wenger secure the club their first title in over a decade.

At the club's AGM today, Kroenke told Wenger that he was "one of the main reasons" he chose to buy the club.

And the American was quoted by the Associated Press as telling the Frenchman that: "[I] want to see you win the championship this year."

Wenger was handed a portrait by Kroenke to mark his 20 years in charge of the north London giants.

And the owner said: "You always handle yourself with tremendous class.

"We know we will compete for trophies."

The Arsenal manager's current contract with the Gunners expires at the end of this season and he has been mooted as a target for the Football Association as they look to appoint the next England boss.

However, with Kroenke a firm fan, Wenger is expected to be offered a new contract to stay with Arsenal and extend his two-decade long service to the club.

On the pitch, Arsenal drew at home against Middlesbrough on Saturday and sit joint top of the Premier League with Manchester City and Liverpool.
