Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer admits he has had worries that Manchester United might have shown other Premier League clubs how to stifle the Reds at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho’s team, who were thrashed 4-0 by Chelsea on Sunday, held free-scoring Liverpool to a goalless draw last Monday, adopting an ultra-defensive approach at Anfield, with their wide players tucking in as extra full-backs to make a back six.

It was only the second time Liverpool had failed to score in the Premier League this season and the first instance of the Merseyside giants not scoring at Anfield in the present campaign.

Manchester United took a defensive approach for their trip to Anfield and managed to nullify Liverpool’s attacks, despite Jurgen Klopp’s team dominating proceedings for the majority of the game.

And McAteer, whose former club beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a home fixture on Saturday, feels other clubs in the Premier League may take a leaf out of Manchester United’s book in tackling Liverpool at Anfield.

“I just hope Manchester United haven't shown teams the blueprint of how to play when they come here”, he said on LFC TV after the win.

“I know we go on about Mourinho and what he does when he comes to Anfield, but I was impressed the way he set his team up.

“I was just worried it might have shown other managers the way to combat how Liverpool play.”

Liverpool, who are level on points with leaders Manchester City, have thus far scored 20 goals in the Premier League this season, the joint-highest in the division along with the Citizens.
