Former Liverpool midfielder David Thompson has indicated that there could be some major changes to the Reds line-up against Tottenham Hotspur tonight, revealing he is hearing rumours youngsters could be drafted into the team.

Jurgen Klopp’s men will host the north Londoners at Anfield tonight and at stake is a quarter-final berth in the EFL Cup, a competition where the Reds made the final last season.

Liverpool have been in good form in the Premier League this season and there have been suggestions that Klopp could look to field a weakened line-up to keep his best players fresh for next weekend’s league commitment.

Thompson is not in favour of seeing undeserving youngsters in the Liverpool team tonight against Spurs and feels the German will be disrespecting the competition if he opts to play a weakened starting eleven.

The former Red believes the competition gives Liverpool a genuine chance of silverware and feels youngsters should not play at this stage of the EFL Cup if they are not good enough to play in the Premier League.

He took to Instagram and wrote: “I'm hearing rumours Liverpool are considering playing a few youngsters tonight.

“Surely it's slightly disrespectful to the EFL Cup.

"If they are not being considered seriously at Premier League level then they shouldn't be playing here at this stage in the competition in my opinion.

“This is a good chance for Liverpool to bag silverware this season and should not be underestimated.

"I'm all for giving the youngsters a chance but only on merit.”
