Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor feels that while the EFL Cup will come high up on Jurgen Klopp's list of priorities for this season, Tottenham Hotspur will be less interested in the competition.

Jurgen Klopp’s team, who beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in the Premier League at the weekend, will take on Tottenham in the fourth round of the domestic cup competition this evening.

Liverpool lost the League Cup final to Manchester City on penalties last season, with the Merseyside giants going on to lose the Europa League final 3-1 to Sevilla later in the 2015/16 campaign.

And Mellor is of the opinion that Klopp will want to make things right and win his first trophy for Liverpool, which would come in the form of the EFL Cup.

He also explained that Spurs, who have Champions League football, will not be as focused on the EFL Cup as Liverpool.

“Obviously it was a huge disappointment when we lost the League Cup final to Manchester City”, he told LFC TV.

“I thinks this competition is very important for Liverpool this season. I think the main reason has to be the fact that we are not competing in Europe this season.

“We take on Tottenham on Tuesday night, they are competing in the Champions League, so the League Cup will be of less importance to them.

“But for ourselves, the disappointment of losing two cup finals last season, League Cup being one of them, we will really try to put that right and Jurgen Klopp will want to win his first trophy for Liverpool, and the League Cup comes first while the season is still going.”

Liverpool, who are currently level on points with leaders Manchester City in the Premier League, beat Burton Albion and Derby County in the previous two rounds of the EFL Cup by 5-0 and 3-0 margins respectively.
