Leeds United head coach Garry Monk has dubbed his side's penalty shootout win over Norwich City in the EFL Cup "unbelievable".

Monk rang the changes for Leeds in the cup tie at Elland Road and Norwich went in front in just the 14th minute through Alex Pritchard, who connected with the ball to head in at the far post.

Norwich were bossing the game, but Leeds grew into the match as the end of the first half neared, getting their reward when Marcus Antonsson tapped in two minutes before the break.

It ended 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes and Leeds were forced to play extra time with ten men following an injury to Lewie Coyle, with Monk having used all of his substitutions.

And Norwich pulled ahead again in the additional 30 minutes when Nelson Oliviera was unmarked and headed in from close range, making it 2-1 to the visitors.

Leeds fought back however as Hadi Sacko put a cross into the box and Chris Wood helped it into the net to make it 2-2 and send the game to penalties.

The Whites won the shootout 3-2, young Ronaldo Vieira scoring the crucial goal, and Monk was delighted.

He told LUTV: "I'm delighted and very proud of my team tonight.

"The character and determination shone through, we showed everything tonight.

"It was an unbelievable atmosphere, that is what football and cup ties are all about.

"The atmosphere was right up there tonight, the fans want 100% and the players are delivering that", he added.
