Rangers and Joey Barton are set to hold showdown talks later this week to take a decision on the midfielder’s future at Ibrox.

The 34-year-old has been serving a suspension since rowing with Andy Halliday following their 5-1 defeat to Celtic last month.

The veteran midfielder joined Rangers in the summer after helping Burnley earn promotion to the Premier League and was expected to add experience to Warburton’ squad in their first campaign back in the Scottish top tier.

He did very little during his time on the pitch for the Gers and it seems highly unlikely that he will ever wear the Rangers jersey after last month’s training ground bust-up.

According to the BBC, the midfielder will meet Rangers officials this Thursday for talks and is hoping to sort out his future, which appears set to be away from Ibrox.

Warburton has drawn criticism for not being tough enough towards Barton and many believe the Rangers manager allowed the issue to grow out of proportion with his handling of the situation.

The midfielder has been linked with a move back to Burnley in January and it seems his time at Rangers is edging closer towards its end.
