Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has taken a dig at the Reds' fierce rivals Manchester United by saying his only hope for the EFL Cup quarter-final draw is that the Anfield club avoid Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s men secured their passage into the last eight of the competition with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Tuesday night, with Daniel Sturridge scoring a brace.

Liverpool are expected to keep a keen eye on the Manchester derby tonight at Old Trafford, which sees Manchester United host Manchester City, but it seems one former Red has already ruled out the home side’s chances.

McAteer said he does not want Liverpool to play Manchester City, suggesting Jose Mourinho’s men have no chance of beating the Citizens in the derby at Old Trafford.

McAteer, asked about looking forward to the EFL Cup quarter-final draw, said on LFC TV: "Just hope we stay away from Man City [in the draw]."
