Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has reflected on a job well done after a much changed Reds team beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in the EFL Cup.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp made eleven changes to the team on Tuesday night from the one that played against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend, with the Merseyside giants also winning the Premier League contest by the same scoreline.

Daniel Sturridge scored on either side of the half-time interval at Anfield before Vincent Janssen pulled one back for the visitors late on as Liverpool progressed to the quarter-finals of the domestic cup competition.

While Trent Alexander-Arnold made his senior competitive debut for Liverpool in the game, Ovie Ejaria received his first start for the Reds.

The likes of Marko Grujic, Lucas Leiva, Divock Origi and Sturridge, who have been sparingly used by Klopp this season, also featured in the EFL Cup game against Spurs.

And McAteer, who admitted that Liverpool could have faced problems due to making so many changes to the team, was however, pleased with the Reds’ overall performance at Anfield.

“Sturridge got a few chances, got his goals, could have had hat-trick, could have had five or six to be honest, the chances he had”, he told LFC TV.

“It was his quality that shone through for Liverpool and you could say it was good performance all over the pitch.

“Young Alexander-Arnold didn’t do anything wrong, [Kevin] Stewart in the middle of the park was neat and tidy.

“Ejaria did okay and Liverpool got the job done.

"And to be fair, with that amount of changes, it could’ve got wrong, but they got the right result and are in the next round.”

Liverpool will next face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.
