Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson is of the opinion that manager Jurgen Klopp should go all out to win the EFL Cup this term as it will help the Reds to kick on.

The Merseyside giants, who reached the final of domestic cup competition last season and lost to Manchester City on penalties, beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Tuesday night to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Jose Mourinho’s first trophy in England was the League Cup, now rechristened the EFL Cup and it laid the foundation of a successful period for both him and Chelsea.

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also won the competition in a lean period, and it helped the Red Devils to turn their fortunes around.

And Lawrenson, who won the competition three times during his time at Liverpool, feels Klopp should target winning the EFL Cup as it could kickstart a successful period for him at Anfield.

“It would be Klopp’s first [trophy], which is always the hardest”, he said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“You win it in March don’t you? Then you have got another eight weeks of the season left.

“You can only speak about your days. When we used to win it, you didn't half kick on for the rest of the season because the pressure was off a little bit because you had to win one or two competitions every season.

“What about when Fergie was struggling, they won the League Cup, and what did they do? They kicked on.”

Liverpool, who also lost the Europa League final to Sevilla last season, have not won any trophy since lifting the League Cup in the 2011/12 campaign.
