David Hay believes Moussa Dembele is only going to get better, with the former Celtic midfielder and manager backing the striker to play for the French national team in the future.

Dembele, who joined Celtic from Fulham on a four-year deal in the summer, has been in stupendous form for the Scottish champions.

The 20-year-old has thus far scored 15 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for Celtic, including four goals in two games against Rangers, with the youngster netting a hat-trick in the season’s first Old Firm derby in September.

Dembele has already represented France Under-21s, and Hay, who considers the forward an “exceptional talent”, is certain about him playing for the senior national team in the coming years.

“He has been fantastic since he came to Celtic”, Hay told Celtic TV.

“That hat-trick against Rangers early on in the season, he got another first class finish the other day [Sunday].

“I think he’s an exceptional talent; he’s only going to get better.

“He enjoys playing for Celtic, he probably had choices to go to other clubs, but he decided to come to Celtic and it will be interesting to see how his career develops.

“I think he can go all the way to the top; one day I’m sure he will end up playing for the French national team.

“I know he’s playing for the Under-21s, he’s some talent.”

Dembele, whose late goal at Hampden last weekend helped Celtic to dump Rangers out of the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup, also found the back of the net in the 4-0 win over Ross County on Wednesday night after coming on as a second-half substitute at the Global Energy Stadium.

He is currently keeping Leigh Griffiths out of the team.
