Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has dubbed legendary former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson a "really nice person", but admits he is not allowed to speak warmly of the Scot due to his post at Anfield.

Ferguson, who is not popular amongst Liverpool fans, recently said that Klopp's side must be considered serious contenders for the Premier League title.

The German manager is happy that Ferguson rates his Liverpool side highly, however he cautioned that the former boss was sure to have simply made the comments in response to questions, rather than offering up a positive view of the Reds.

Klopp said at a press conference: "I'm not sure that I am allowed to say I like Alex Ferguson as Liverpool manager. [Laughs].

"I knew him before. He's a really nice person", the Liverpool boss continued.

"He did what he had to do at Manchester and that means automatically it's not good for Liverpool.

"When he has to say something positive about Liverpool then it's better than when he would say something negative.

"But it doesn't mean a lot.

"I'm pretty sure Alex Ferguson did not go out of his house and say I have something to say about Liverpool.

"I'm sure he was asked a few questions and gave some answers and it was like that."

Klopp's Liverpool have made a fine start to the new Premier League campaign and have been boosted by the absence of European football this season, allowing them further time on the training ground.
