Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino admits that striker Harry Kane could be ready to return for the north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday, though Wednesday night's Champions League game comes too soon for the Englishman.

Kane has been out of action since picking up an injury in a win over Sunderland in September and Spurs have struggled in his absence, slipping out of the Premier League's top four this weekend.

He is though firmly on the comeback trail, along with another key player in the shape of Toby Alderweireld, who was injured in Spurs' draw at West Brom last month.

Pochettino was asked about the duo at a press conference ahead of Tottenham's Champions League meeting with Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening at Wembley.

And he replied: "He [Kane] won’t be ready for tomorrow night. Sunday maybe. We need to assess [him].

"Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld had a special [training] session today.

"We hope Harry will be back in full training on Thursday."

Spurs could only draw away in Germany against Leverkusen in their last Champions League group game, counting themselves fortunate to take a point from the fixture as they were under the cosh at the BayArena.

Pochettino will hope his side can edge out the Germans at England's national stadium on Wednesday evening.
