Liverpool loanee Danny Ward has revealed that the fierce competition in the goalkeeping department at Anfield this season has been fascinating for him to watch from a distance.

There were plenty of changes on the goalkeeping front at Liverpool this season, with the Reds bringing in Loris Karius from Mainz to provide competition for Simon Mignolet.

On the other hand, Adam Bogdan and Ward left the Merseyside giants on season-long loan deals to Wigan Athletic and Huddersfield Town respectively.

Karius, who was initially tipped to be Liverpool’s first choice goalkeeper this season, fractured his hand in pre-season.

As a result, Mignolet started between the sticks for Jurgen Klopp’s team in the present campaign before Karius dislodged him from the starting line-up after becoming fit.

The summer signing has played seven of the last eight games in all competitions for Liverpool, with Mignolet featuring in the 2-1 EFL Cup win over Tottenham Hotspur last month.

And Ward, who thinks competition is needed to keep complacency in check, is enjoying the battle between Karius and Mignolet for a place in the starting line-up.

“As a goalkeeper, when you go out to train every day and feel there is someone who is not pushing you, or you think he might not be in your level, then you might slack off and get complacent”, he told LFC TV.

“But when you have top goalkeepers like we have at the club, it is tough every day, it is a battle for that number one jersey.

“It has been fascinating to watch from afar, which is strange because normally I am there in and amongst it.

“We have two top goalkeepers at the moment, and hopefully they can keep pushing each other on.”

Liverpool, who are currently top of the Premier League table, have conceded 14 goals in 11 league games, the highest amongst the top seven clubs in the division.
