Ex-Celtic star Andy Lynch feels the Hoops need someone of Steven Gerrard’s class to play alongside Scott Brown in midfield in European games.

Brendan Rodgers’ team have been linked with making a January move for the former Liverpool midfielder, whose contract with Los Angeles Galaxy runs until 31st December 2016.

Barring the Premier League, Gerrard won everything at Liverpool, including the Champions League and the UEFA Cup.

On the other hand, Celtic, who are currently rock-bottom in their Champions League group, need positive results against Barcelona and Manchester City to have any chance of finishing third and continuing their European journey via the Europa League.

And Lynch believes Celtic would hugely benefit from having Gerrard in their midfield alongside Brown in European games in the second half of the season, should the Scottish giants qualify for the Round of 32 of the Europa League.

“Where Europe is concerned I think without doubt Celtic need a guy like him to help in the middle of the park if they are to challenge teams to reach the last 16 over the next couple of years”, he was quoted as saying by the Daily Record.

“He would be ideal to go into the middle and ease some of the responsibility on Scott Brown.

"It seems to me Brown has too much on his plate a lot of times, too much is expected from him.

“That would make a heck of a difference in going for the latter stages in Europe.

"Imagine if Gerrard’s fit and in the middle with Brown you start thinking this could be a very good team.”

Celtic are yet to win a game in the group stage of the Champions League this season.
