Jose Mourinho has already made moves in an attempt to put in place a deal to take Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, who was recently linked with Aston Villa, to Manchester United in the winter transfer window.

The Portuguese has made strengthening his centre-back options a priority for when the winter window swings open in January, which is just over a month away.

According to Portuguese sports daily O Jogo, Lindelof is the man Mourinho has set his sights on and the Manchester United manager has already started to work on the deal.

The Red Devils increasingly believe they are in a good position to sign the Sweden international centre-back.

It remains to be seen whether Benfica will be willing to let Lindelof leave mid-season, however Manchester United could trigger the release clause in his contract and as a result render the Portuguese side powerless.

Championship club Aston Villa were mooted as being on Lindelof's tail just last month, along with Serie A clubs Inter and Napoli.

But the trio could find it difficult to compete with Manchester United for the centre-back's signature.

Lindelof has so far made 16 appearances in all competitions for Benfica in the current campaign and is under contract with the club until the summer of 2020.
