Jose Mourinho has hailed his Manchester United side for playing "beautiful football" after they swept aside West Ham United with a 4-1 victory in the EFL Cup at Old Trafford.

It took just two minutes for Manchester United to take the lead in the quarter-final tie as Zlatan Ibrahimovic was left with a clipped finish to instantly put the Hammers on the back foot.

West Ham drew level in the 35th minute, Ashley Fletcher coming back to haunt his former club, as he took advantage of a mistake made by David de Gea.

Manchester United appeared stunned, but recomposed themselves in the second half and within only three minutes of the restart Anthony Martial put the hosts 2-1 up, benefiting from good work from Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

He then added a third for Manchester United just past the hour mark when played in by Antonio Valencia.

And in injury time Ibrahimovic grabbed his second to make it 4-1 to Manchester United and a comfortable night's work, delighting Mourinho.

"The performance is something we are used to, we are playing very well at home. Today was more of the same", Mourinho was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"After the West Ham goal we had 10 minutes where we felt it deeply.

"West Ham's first shot, they equalise. But in the second half we got the confidence to play and play beautiful, attacking football.

"I told them at half-time it is not possible to play so well and because of a goal stop playing so well.

"I told them to forget about the undeserved goal, we are playing so well, we have to keep the confidence and lets go on with it.

"Goals plus performance means the real happiness", Mourinho added.
