Bayern Munich supervisory board member Edmund Stoiber has insisted that Thomas Muller’s situation is different to Bastian Schweinsteiger, thereby ruling out a move for the 27-year-old to Manchester United.

The Red Devils, who snapped up Schweinsteiger from the German champions in 2015, much to the anger of Die Roten's fans, have been time and again linked with making a move for Muller.

During Louis van Gaal's time in charge at Old Trafford, it was claimed that Manchester United were preparing a bid in the region of £85m to lure Muller away from the Allianz Arena.

However, the forward, who stayed put at Bayern Munich, is currently enduring his worst season under new manager Carlo Ancelotti; Muller is yet to find the back of the net in the Bundesliga in the present campaign.

But Muller is still a fan favourite at Bayern Munich and Stoiber explained that the supporters would be enraged if the club allowed him to follow in the footsteps of Schweinsteiger and join Manchester United.

Stoiber, who admitted that the fans were unhappy after Schweinsteiger left Bayern Munich for Manchester United, however, was quick to point out it was a different scenario as the freshly retired Germany international was seeking a different challenge due to being in the twilight of his career.

"It should not be happening that someone like Thomas Muller plays for Manchester United", he told German daily Bild.

"The fans were already a bit unhappy when Schweinsteiger left us for Manchester United. But he was already 32 and wanted a new challenge.

“But our fans and members would never forgive us if we sold Muller.

"He is the opposite of someone like Cristiano Ronaldo. He is much more than just a great player. Muller is part of our DNA.

"He represents key values for us and is someone the fans love."

Muller’s present contract with Bayern Munich runs until the summer of 2021.
