Roma have made initial contact with Manchester United as they pursue the signature of Netherlands international Memphis Depay ahead of the opening of the January transfer window.

Depay has found himself out of favour at Manchester United this season under Jose Mourinho and has been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this winter.

The Dutchman has already been linked with a move to Everton, where Ronald Koeman is an admirer, Tottenham Hotspur and even Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, who are believed to be interested in the 22-year-old.

However, it seems Serie A giants Roma have made the first real move for the Dutchman as according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, club sporting director Frederic Massara has got in touch with Manchester United over a move for Depay.

It has been suggested that Roma have initially proposed a loan deal for the Dutchman in January, with an option to make the move permanent for a fee worth €25m.

With Depay struggling to even feature in cup competitions for Manchester United, it is widely expected that the winger will be shifted out during the January window.

And with Roma coming up with a tentative proposal for the Dutchman, it seems the former PSV Eindhoven man could be playing in Italy in the second half of the season.

Depay has played just 134 minutes of football over eight appearances in all competitions this season and has a contract until 2019 with Manchester United.
