Liverpool legend Ray Houghton feels Joel Matip has been an “absloute revelation” since joining the Reds in the summer.

The defender, who was roped in by Liverpool from Schalke on a free transfer during the summer transfer window, has been in fine form for his new employers.

Matip has thus far made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants, helping the club to keep five clean sheets.

And Houghton, who believes the Cameroon international has adopted brilliantly to the Premier League, praised the partnership he has struck up with Dejan Lovren at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

The former midfielder went on to add that he believes that the Liverpool midfielders tracking back as an unit have also significantly helped out Matip and company in defence.

“Matip coming in has been excellent”, Houghton said on LFC TV.

“He has been an absolute revelation since he has come in.

“He has adapted so well in the Premier League. He and Lovren have struck up a really good understanding in that central position.

“They have got the likes of [Jordan] Henderson in front, [Emre] Can, [Georginio] Wijnaldum and [Adam] Lallana, who have been working so hard defensively.

“They are attacking as a unit and defending as a unit, and that’s working out very well at the moment.”

Liverpool, who have not conceded in their last three games in all competitions, will next take on Bournemouth in an away Premier League fixture on Sunday.
