Leeds United head coach Garry Monk says he cannot remember Aston Villa having a clear cut chance at Elland Road this evening, as the Whites ran out 2-0 winners in the Championship clash between the two sides.

The first half was a scrappy affair as neither side were able to get a foothold in the game, as they went in at the break locked at 0-0.

In the second period Leeds upped their intensity and took the lead in the 68th minute through Kemar Roofe. Ending a 22-game streak without a goal, the forward connected with a cross from Souleymane Doukara to head Leeds in front.

Villa struggled to get back into the game and eventually Chris Wood put the match to bed when he poked into the net from close range in injury time as it ended 2-0 to the home side, who are now up to fourth in the Championship standings.

For Monk, Leeds were worthy winners and the Whites boss says he could not remember Villa carving his side open even once in the game.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: "We had the best chances and looked the most dangerous, but we limited them and I can't remember them having a clear cut chance.

"Once we got the first goal, we started to play our better football, but we can't make the mistake of not doing that again."

Monk says that Leeds' midweek loss to Liverpool in the EFL Cup may have had an effect on their first half performance, but he was delighted with the way the Whites showed character to fight their way to victory.

"First half we weren't using the ball well enough, which was disappointing, but I thought the victory was very hard fought. The first goal was when we started to look more like ourselves.

"We didn't play at our best at Burton after the Norwich cup game and maybe it was the same here, after Liverpool, but I'm happy with the character we showed.

"We do a lot of defensive work to make sure we have something solid to remain in the game.

"The first goal and the end of the game, I was happy with. It's hard to be critical with this group as they've had a hard week", the Leeds boss added.

Next up for the Whites is a trip to face second placed Brighton on Friday evening.
