Mauricio Pochettino admits that Tottenham Hotspur needed their thumping 5-0 win over Swansea City on Saturday to recover from their recent poor performances in the league and in Europe.

Tottenham were favourites to see off a struggling Swansea side at White Hart Lane and the home side started on the front foot, dominating the ball and creating chances, but they were struggling to beat the resistance put up by the visitors until towards the end of the first half.

Spurs got the break when Kyle Naughton tripped Dele Alli inside the box and the home side earned a penalty, which Harry Kane duly converted in the 39th minute to put Tottenham in the lead.

And in the final few moments Tottenham delivered a telling blow to Swansea when Heung-min Son smashed home a masterful volley to double Spurs’ lead going into the break.

Any hope of a second half revival from Swansea was crushed when Kane scored his second of the afternoon in the 49th minute to help Tottenham romp to a 3-0 lead early after the break.

Kane had another goal disallowed in the second half due to offside, but the afternoon only got worse for Swansea when Lukasz Fabianksi plodded a cross from Alli into Christian Eriksen’s path and the Dane tapped in Tottenham’s fourth goal in the 70th minute.

And the Danish playmaker was at it again when he again popped up in the box to score his second and Tottenham’s fifth of the afternoon in stoppage time to compound Swansea’s miserable day in north London.

Pochettino was delighted with the performance of his men at White Hart Lane and admits that following demoralising defeats to Monaco and Chelsea, his team needed such a showing.

The Tottenham boss told Spurs TV: "Very happy with the performance and the three points to be close to the top.

“Very, very important for us.

"I think it was a good performance, we needed to feel a victory again after Monaco and Chelsea and I think today we fully deserve the result in the end."

Tottenham will look to secure Europa League qualification when they host CSKA Moscow on Wednesday night in their final Champions League group game.
