Bayern Munich midfielder Xabi Alonso has drawn parallels between Leicester City’s road to the Premier League title last season and RB Leipzig’s rise in the Bundesliga this term.

The Foxes, who just about saved their Premier League status at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, shocked the whole football world by winning the title last season.

Something similar is happening in Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, who earned promotion to the top tier of German football last season and are currently leading the league table.

Three points clear at the top of the league table, Leipzig have challenged the domination of Bayern Munich in Germany this term and Alonso conceded that the east German outfit are following the same path as Leicester.

When asked whether Leipzig’s run is similar to what Leicester did last season, the Spanish midfielder told American news network CNN: “At the moment, yes.

“They have found a very clear idea of how they want to play; they play one game a week, they are on a high, in good mood and in so much confidence.

“I hope not, but at the moment they are on the same run.”

Despite their meteoric rise in recent season, Leipzig remain one of the most unpopular clubs in German football because of their ownership by Red Bull.

They have regularly faced protests from opposition fans this season in the Bundesliga who feel the club’s owners have gone against the principle of fan ownership in Germany.
