Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has praised Loris Karius, despite the German’s poor display in the Reds’ 4-3 loss to Bournemouth last weekend.

Karius, who joined Liverpool from Mainz on a five-year deal in the summer, is yet to make his mark at Anfield, despite dislodging Simon Mignolet.

The 23-year-old has thus far made 10 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants, keeping four clean sheets.

Karius has come in for criticism after letting in four goals against Bournemouth; Liverpool were leading 3-1 by the 75th minute before losing the game at the Vitality Stadium in spectacular fashion.

However, Reina, who feels Karius is “doing really well”, refused to single out the former Mainz man for the debacle against Bournemouth.

“I think he doesn’t need any encouragement”, he was quoted as saying by ITV.

“I think he’s a brilliant goalkeeper who is doing really well.

“It’s a team, you know, that also at times has to do better for the goalkeeper.”

Despite the loss at Bournemouth, Liverpool are still firmly in the title race as they presently find themselves third in the Premier League table with 30 points from 14 games, just four behind leaders Chelsea.

And Reina backed his former employers to fare well in the present campaign.

“I think they will do really well this season and I’m happy for them”, he added.
