Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin feels Rangers will not be able to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title for the next two to three years.

Rangers, who returned to the Scottish Premiership after a gap of four years as they had to start life in the fourth tier, following their liquidation in 2012, presently find themselves in second spot in the league table with 29 points from 16 games.

On the other hand, Celtic are eight points clear at the top of the table with three games in hand; the Hoops are aiming for their sixth consecutive Scottish Premiership title.

And Nevin thinks it would not be right to expect Rangers to be battling with Celtic for the next two or three years, especially with the Bhoys currently being strong financially.

“It would be weird and extraordinary to expect Rangers to be right back on terms with Celtic after just one year in the Premiership with all the financial advantages that Celtic have at the moment”, he said on BBC Radio 5 live.

“I suspect Rangers will be, I don't know about challenging, but second within the next two to three years.

“I expect that to be the case.”

Celtic, who have already beaten Rangers twice in all competitions in the present campaign, ended their Champions League campaign for the season with a 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Tuesday night.
