Germany legend Lothar Matthaus does not think Wolfsburg will make a profit on the amount they paid Schalke for Julian Draxler, when they eventually offload the attacking midfielder.

Draxler is keen to leave the Volkswagen Arena and has been continually linked with Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain. The German only switched to Wolfsburg in 2015, but was eager to leave in the summer, something the club blocked.

Wolfsburg paid a fee of €33m, plus a further €7m in bonus payments being potentially due, to win the race for Draxler.

But Matthaus thinks the Wolves must forget any thoughts of making a profit on Draxler, whose value he believes has suffered during his time at the club.

Matthaus told German magazine Sport Bild: "I do not believe that VfL Wolfsburg selling Julian Draxler, despite his long term contract, would bring more than the €33m plus €7m bonus that Wolfsburg paid for him.

"His market value has suffered severely in recent years."

Matthaus also explained that if he was in charge of a big club he would not be looking to sign Draxler at present.

The Germany legend thinks that Draxler has not yet proven himself at the highest level, while there are also question marks over his character.

"I would like to say that as a big club I would not sign Draxler at the moment.

"On the one hand because of his weakness in character, on the other hand, since he is a talent, but has not yet proved the difference consistently at the highest level."

In the current campaign Draxler has made 12 appearances in all competitions for Wolfsburg, but has yet to find the back of the net.
