Sunderland will not be signing French midfielder Yann M'Vila in January after they were told that he longer wishes to join the Premier League outfit.

M’Vila played a key role in helping Sunderland avoid relegation last season and the Black Cats were keen to sign him in the summer from Rubin Kazan, but the deal fell through at the last moment.

The Frenchman, who returned to the Russian outfit, has made nine appearances this season for Rubin Kazan and Sunderland were expected to move to sign him in January.

However, Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain has revealed that the club won’t be looking to sign the player as M’Vila is no longer willing to join the Black Cats.

He also added that a contract was in place, but the club have decided against enforcing the situation.

Bain was quoted as saying by the BBC: "Any player we bring to Sunderland must be wholly committed.

"I was contacted this week by Yann M'Vila's representatives, who advised that the player no longer wishes to join Sunderland.

"There was a three-and-a-half-year agreement in place, however after discussions with the manager we have decided not to enforce the contract."

He has a contract until the end of the month with Rubin Kazan and is free to join any other club in January.
