Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has revealed his delight after returning to action in his side’s 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday night and says he worked very hard to make it happen.

The Belgium international picked up a knee injury during Spurs’ 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on 15th October and was sidelined for over seven weeks.

Before coming on as a 68th minute substitute at Wembley against CSKA Moscow, Alderweireld had missed Tottenham’s previous 10 games in all competitions due to the injury.

And the 27-year-old, who insisted that he worked hard during his injury layoff to become fully fit, explained that he was “very happy” to be back playing again.

“I’m very happy”, he told Spurs TV.

“It was a tough two months because of the situation, it was not a normal injury.

“I had to wait for my muscles and my nerves to start working again.

“I worked very hard so that the moment my muscles and nerves started working again that I can be fit and ready to play again.

“I put a lot of effort into it, and I am happy to be back.”

Alderweireld has thus far made 11 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham in the present campaign, helping the club to keep five clean sheets.

The centre-back, who joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015, is contracted with the north London club until the summer of 2020.
