Leeds United head coach Garry Monk says he cannot take too many positives from his side's 2-0 Championship defeat away at Brighton.

Brighton were quickly on top on home turf, dominating the ball and putting pressure on the Leeds defence, however they needed until the 23rd minute to make the breakthrough.

It came when Lewis Dunk turned a shot goalwards from a corner and Kalvin Phillips handled on the line, leading to a sending off and a penalty being given to the Seagulls.

Glenn Murray made no mistake from the spot and it was 1-0 to the home side.

Murray should have scored again soon afterwards when he found space in the box, but could only head into the side netting.

Brighton were pushing for a second and Rob Green turned over the bar in first half stoppage time as Leeds kept the damage down.

The Seagulls had further opportunities in the second half, along with a disallowed goal, as Leeds hung on to make the game competitive.

But Brighton put the game beyond any doubt when Tomer Hemed netted from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute, following a foul in the box by Kyle Bartley on Dunk.

It ended 2-0 and Monk had no complaints with the pair of penalties, telling Sky Sports after the match: "I haven't seen them, but I understand they were penalties. We never gave ourselves a chance to show our best."

Monk also believes that his side caused their own downfall.

"With respect to Brighton, I felt we made our own downfall.

"We never allowed ourselves to show our true best.

"We limited them even at ten men to stay in the game, which was the plan at that point in the game."

The Leeds boss cannot see many positives from the defeat and has vowed to refocus his side for their game against Reading next week.

"Not too many positives from tonight. We didn't allow ourselves to show our best tonight.

"My work now is to refocus the players for Tuesday, a big game."
