Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has called on the Reds to shed their attacking style of play and be a bit more cautious when they find themselves on the back foot.

Jurgen Klopp’s team saw their 15-game unbeaten run in all competitions come to an end after their shock loss at Bournemouth last weekend.

Despite leading 3-1 up to the 75th minute at the Vitality Stadium, Liverpool ended up losing the game 4-3.

As a result, Souness wants Liverpool to understand when they are no longer in control of a game and hence change their approach accordingly.

The 63-year-old admitted that while the Merseyside giants are wonderful going forward, their defence looks fragile, especially when the going gets tough.

“You can’t always rely on your strikers to dig you out from holes”, he was quoted as saying by beIN Sports.

“It’s the defence, and when I say defence, it’s not just the goalkeeper and the back four.

“It’s about the midfielders playing a part, and in some cases the strikers playing a part.

“They have all got to sense when a game turns and that they are no longer bossing the game.

“In that case your full-backs don’t wander, and one if not two of your central midfielders – [Emre] Can and [Jordan] Henderson in this case, they should stay behind the ball then and support the others rather than going forward.

“Liverpool are fabulous going forward, but when they are not dominating the ball, and they are not on the front foot, they don’t look very solid.”

Liverpool, who currently occupy third spot in the Premier League table with 30 points from 14 games, just four behind leaders Chelsea and Arsenal, will next face West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday.
