Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur will find it difficult to attract the right type of players during the winter transfer window.

Spurs, who will next face Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, are presently fifth in the table with 27 points from 14 games, seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Tottenham have successfully managed to extend the contracts of several first team stars this season, such as Eric Dier, Danny Rose and Dele Alli; Harry Kane and Jan Vertonghen were the latest Spurs players to commit their long-term futures to White Hart Lane, with the duo signing new deals earlier in the month.

And Pochettino explained that while Tottenham may struggle to bring in the right kind of players in January, the north London club are showing their ambition for the future by tying several of their influential players to new deals.

“I think January is always difficult to find the right profile to help you”, he said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“Always when you bring players in from outside, they don’t have too much time to settle into your club and your philosophy for many reasons.

“I think it will be difficult to find that profile that can help us, but I think the club is doing a very good job to extend the contracts of the key players.

“That is how we can show our real ambition and how the players show their commitment with us.

"I think that’s a big statement from the club to show our ambition for the future.”

Spurs, who failed to cross the group stage hurdle in the Champions League, will now continue their European campaign this season via the Europa League.
