Ex-Celtic star Tom Boyd feels Leigh Griffiths can consider himself “very unlucky” at not starting more games this season despite being in good form.

The striker, who was the Hoops top goalscorer last term with 40 strikes to his name, has started just 12 games in all competitions in the present campaign, with six of those coming in the qualification rounds of the Champions League.

Summer signing Moussa Dembele has mostly been Celtic’s first-choice striker under new boss Brendan Rodgers, with the Frenchman thus far netting 17 times in 30 games for the Scottish champions.

Griffiths, who started in Celtic’s 4-1 win over Partick Thistle in the league last Friday, scored once and set up two goals at Firhill.

And Boyd thinks Griffiths is desperately “unlucky” not being able to start more often for Celtic this season, despite scoring 10 goals in 20 appearances in all competitions.

“It’s not just about his goalscoring, you can see, you can see the quality of crosses that he puts in”, he told Celtic TV, when asked about Griffiths.

“He has got the whole package. He can consider himself very unlucky at this moment of time that he has not started a few more games considering the form he is in.

“Obviously Moussa came in and took his opportunities. It will be interesting to see who plays if the manager doesn’t go with the two strikers.

“It’s difficult to find a way to play both the strikers, but it’s great to have someone with that ability to come on and turn it on when asked.”

Griffiths, who joined Celtic from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2014, is contracted with the Scottish giants until 2021.
